A Wanaka autumn Couple Session To Remember

“We wanted to capture the feeling of New Zealand - the mountains, the golden tones of Wānaka in autumn and the quiet joy of simply being there - together. It had been cloudy and pouring with rain in the morning but just before we met the wonderful Natalia for our session the sun broke through. What started as just an idea turned into a core memory”.

Paula and Robert are from Europe, like many others have been traveling through New Zealand in their van. We connected through Facebook after a friend tagged me in a post of Paula’s looking for a photographer on short notice who could capture them with Wānaka's autumn colours with the mountains as a backdrop. My ‘milestone sessions’ are perfect for them and I knew just the spot. Eely point, not a secret area, but a place with space to explore different landscapes around each turn.
The weather in Wānaka had been trash leading up to their session, but right on time the clouds lifted, rain stopped and sun came bursting through! Paula turned up wearing yellow jeans. Bright, vibrant, impossible-to-miss yellow jeans. Not everyone can pull that off. Paula did. I knew this session was going to be fun.

We spent a few minutes getting to know each other, talking through a few ideas and visions Paula had, then got down to adventuring. The sun had peaked through, so we slowly made our way around Eely point, snapping photos among the autumn leaves, where Paula and Robert busted out a dance they'd learned together along the lake front. This is when I knew we were comfortable, the pressure was released, and now we were just hanging out.

As we went around the point, the light wasn't as harsh anymore. I knew the trees created a large arch, so I walked ahead, wanting to capture their silhouettes as they wondered around the corner, which left a bit of a pause. In that time, Paula and Robert were running around, doing lifts and just enjoying their time together. I loved seeing it so much, they gave such a fun, high-energy vibe, and it was a pleasure to photograph.
Paula and Robert ignited something inside of me. Something I think they ignite in many people that are lucky to cross paths with them. A carefree, don’t take life so seriously type of fun. To wrap up our session I suggested we grab a few snaps of them with their van. Their time in New Zealand was coming to an end. A photo to make sure they have that shot for the scrapbook.
